Lactate Threshold Training, one of the current paradigms for elite level endurance training. It's certainly way better than long, slow distance (LSD). However, we believe that the best way to raise your lactate threshold is to go well past it, often. "Intensity is the independent variable most closely associated with favorable adaptations to exercise." Greg Glassman, CrossFit Founder. Now, thanks to the geeks, ("pencil neck geeks" as the great Freddie Blassie used to say), we know why he's right. Check out this article in the New York Times reporting on the research of a team led by George Brooks, at UC Berkeley: Lactic Acid Is Not Muscle's Foe, It's Fuel. Dr. Brooks's research also explains the results of of Dr. Izumi Tabata's well known research into high intensity interval training. How do you achieve the ability to burn lactic acid as a fuel? Simple, bathe in it with high intensity exercise. It will never happen with LSD.
