"An artist is one who eschews the pursuit of women, money, and fame for the sake of his art, by which he hopes to gain women, money, and fame."

Check out this video from HQ, about how CrossFit athletes with no endurance experience trained for and competed in a 28 mile race with a ton of elevation, all under the guidance of our friend and  former CF ATL trainer, Ga. Tech track star, Brendan Mahoney,  "The Quad Dipsea" with San Francisco CrossFit, a CrossFit Journal preview video [wmv] [mov].  CF Atl will be starting an endurance team soon.  Stay tuned.

We will be closed this weekend for the CrossFit Games Sectionals!

But you've been invited to visit our friends at CrossFit On The Move for their morning session.

Because of the large number of trainers and and members who will be participating as competitors or volunteers in the CrossFit Games Sectionals  this weekend at Stone Mountain we
won''t have anyone to staff the gym, and probably no one to come
workout.  We have two teams entered in the Affiliate team competition,
too many to count entered in the individual competition, and many
others volunteering in one way or another.

15 men and 15 women will
qualify to move on to the Southeast Regionals, from which 4 men and 4
women will qualify for the 2010 CrossFit Games
to compete for the title of "Fittest Man & Woman on Earth."  Come
out to Stone Mountain and enjoy the fun.  Competition starts at 9 AM.

Everyone make sure and click on the photo and zoom in on Bethanie’s thoroughly awkward pose on the left side of the picture. She looks like she’s a back up dancer for Justin Timberlake or something.

before i read jonathans comment, i was about to write… who is that in the background?? bethanie?? she looks like cat-woman.

Poor Bethanie. Looks like she might be on her way down into an air squat. Still hilarious.
Update on my back. It seems like the inversion I’ve been doing every evening is helping. The last week has seen dramatic decreases in the intensity and frequency of my leg/ass pain and I’ve been able to sit for gradually longer periods of time without discomfort/pain. I’m also down to one physical therapy session a week. I’ve started a 100-day air-squat challenge. Should be a pretty safe and gradual way of putting my hips/hams back into use.
Last night I decided to put some structure around all the pull-ups and push-ups I’ve been doing recently.
3 rounds for max reps with 3 minutes rest in between of:
    strict pull ups
one arm push-ups (right side then left side)
Right side was weaker on the push-ups, but it makes sense since I have been avoiding using the right side of my body for 2-3 months.

The caption could read: “In the background, Bethanie leads the Saturday morning class through a warm-up of interpretive dance”
Peter — good deal on the improvements on your back

  • Bethanie

yeah, not really sure here. I don’t even know what I’m wearing!!? Either I’m about to squat (sending the hips back!!) or poop on the plates.
Jonathan: I’ve already turned JT down too many times for that to be the case…just too busy with CrossFit for those shenanigans.
Leah: congrats on spelling my name correctly for the first time ever.

glad things are moving in the right direction!

I still need a spectator pass to the sectionals. Registration is closed. Anybody have any ideas for me?

  • Leah P

you can get them at the gate…

Hilarious, B! I think that’s the beginning of your squat. You have great form!
I want to be on the endurance team, as it comes so naturally to me. Put me at 60% of my max heart rate, and I’ll go on an on for hours. Interpret that however you like.
But seriously, I have been so concentrated on training for sectionals, that I am ready for a break. Never thought I would say that. Weeekend after this one, I head to Orlando to run the Disney Princess 1/2. Keep in mind that I have been training for it not at all. Not one bit. The most training I did was to buy a new pair of shoes and some shorts from lulu lemon. My quads already out grew them, so now they resemble underwear, which is nice. All of this should be an interesting experiment in how you can perform from an endurance perspective on crossfit alone, without doing ANY long workouts. I’ll keep you posted.
AFter that, I plan on not working out and eating whatever the EFF I want for a week. Stay tuned for a detailed description of the G.I. symptoms I experience as a result.

From one ex-distance athlete to another… good luck. I can’t swim at all like I used to, haha.
But I can sprint like a madman… I donned a Speedo LZR a few weeks ago and dropped a 21.6 50 free screwing around… That’s over a second and a half faster than I ever went as a swimmer. I was gassed afterwards, but quite shocked.

  • MoMo

Yeah, I may run into that same phenomenon, given that my mile time is over 2 minutes faster than it used to be when I was running all the time. Leg muscles are actually helpful when it comes to speed and power. Who knew. The great thing about it is, I could care less about the event. If I walk, I walk. I’ll finish eventually. It’s so freeing to not care about the result. I’m just going to turn on my music and go for it, until, hopefully, in about two hours, the finish line is in my sights.
