Does anybody here give blood? If so, how long do/should you wait before doing a workout?

    Peter,
The following is taken directly from both websites of The Blood Center of Central Texas and the Blood Bank of Alaska. I’m just going to summarize.
Whole blood donations are approximately 450 cc (1 pint). Blood plasma is replenished in 24 hours, but red cells need about 4-5 weeks for complete replacement, which is why they recommend giving only every quarter. One of the websites say: “Avoid strenuous activities such as lifting, pushing, or picking up heavy objects for at least 4 to 5 hours after giving blood. Aerobic activity should be limited for the remainder of the day of donation. Most donors can resume normal aerobic activities the day following their donation.” However, when I was at the Olympic Training Center, some of the physiologist recommended that if you give blood to wait at least 3 days before resuming exercise. I don’t have any evidence that’s more true than the 24 hour rule, though.

Hope to see everyone tonight at Johnny’s Pizza at 7. If you know folks who are coming in town for the cert, be sure to invite them as well!! It’s been a long week, I can’t wait to be sitting there this evening with a salad, a plate of wings and a glass of red wine. Sounds perfect.

Oh, and also, several pairs of my jeans no longer fit. I was getting used to the shoulder thing, but the quad/ass thing is new!!

That’s really random that you posted that today, I was thinking yesterday about giving blood because I used to do it several times a year in hs and college (drink like 2 beers afterwards, you will be wasted), and I was going to ask if anyone had any experience giving blood and then crossfitting.

My girlfriend does it all the time and wants me to go with her the day after Thanksgiving. Call me selfish but I’d rather work out than have my blood drained, not to mention that 7 years in south-east Asia has probably infected my blood with every disease known to man.

Yeah, I’ve been pretty greedy about my blood, too. But the more I think about it, the more I cannot think of a good reason to not give blood.
