Hey Suzanne. Haven’t seen you in forever. How are you?

Last saturday I ripped my hands pretty badly. They have more or less healed up on their own, but I have a split in the middle of each healed rip that opens up every time I open my hands all the way. Is there something I should be doing for this, or is the best method just to tough it out.

Charlie, not a lot you can do now but keep them from drying out. Get some Aquaphor Healing Ointment at your neighbor drug store, it works great.
Next time if you rip that badly, soak your hands in warm salt water the 1st day, speeds up healing tremendously.

So is the strategy to dry them out (Salt water) or to keep the moist (moisturizer)?

I use bagbalm. It’s cheap and it does wonders. My opinion is that you want to keep them moist, but you also have to shave the skin down, or you will continue to split.

I don’t use anything, but that’s because my hands don’t rip often. Or is it the other way around?

Alight, for those of us whose hands aren’t held together by iron will. When we do rip, you are supposed to dry them out and then moisturize?

    Basically yes. 🙂
I found this links quickly, hopefully they will help.
The saltwater helps them heal, sterilize and promotes the skin growing back tougher, so as not to rip so often.
So, soak them in saltwater, let them dry out and then keep a Bagbalm or ointment on them so they don’t crack and further delay them healing.

Piling on to Heidi’s reply, here is another link, this time to the first of a four part series on hand care that appeared on Crossfit Virtuosity:
    http://www.crossfitvirtuosity.com/blogs/articles/18-articles/154-ive-got-to-hand-it-to-you
broadly, the articles cover: how to prevent rips, daily hand maintenance, how to care for rips, and how to keep training once you do have a rip.
It is all in line with the advice already given, but there is one other thing I’ll mention: if the rip isn’t huge, or maybe you have cracked skin that is threatening to rip, you can also patch it with a product like liquid skin, which is available in the first aid aisle at the drug store.

Hey Vas! All is well. Got married in August…and was on a Crossfit break for about a month. It’s been a very ugly and painful return. I’ll come see you guys in the night crew very soon.
    And Heidi, you’re disgusting.

OMG. That’s such a MoMo comment. I love it. People are going to think I hacked your typepad account. And for you incredibly dumb boys out there, just because we joke about sexually explicit matters doesn’t necessarily mean that we are down for participating in sexually explicit matters with you…calm down. NOT directed at you Charlie. You are always a gentleman.

Was trying to stay out of the gym till Sunday but I was going insane. Hit up the globo with a friend of mine.
1RM Bench Press: 295lbs. not bad for doing only body weight for the last year.
3RM Back Squat: 215lbs (PR). Probably could have gone up again but didn’t want to have to bail and get tossed out for throwing weights.
So yeah, I can bench press WAY more than I can back squat. F my life.

Turns out there’s a CrossFit games standard – touch the floor with both hands at the bottom of the sit up and touch the pads with both hands at the top. I did not adhere to this standard today. I will next time GHD sit ups come up.
