Mmmm the weather forecast this week is downright scrumptious. You may not be seeing much of me; I’ll probably be doing as much riding as I can since the weather will rock out and it’s getting to the point where it will get dark too early.
Hope everyone had fun at FGB and at Ri Ra Saturday night!

    Hoping someone can help me…
Ever since my marathon days I’ve struggled off and on with tendonitis in my achilles. Recently, it has become chronic. Every time I run over a mile, I have FIRE shooting up the back of my legs. I’ve been nervous that I’m doing permanent damage when I try to run through the pain. I stretch and ice regularly, to no avail. Thought it may be time to see a Dr? Any recommendations?

What are everyone’s plans for the Oktoberfest Games this weekend. I’m not able to get out of Cincy until Friday evening, which puts me in Nashville late Friday night. Let me know.

Cupcake, is that you?? Are we allowed to talk about diet?? If this is a different Suzanne, please disregard the nickname. In all seriousness, I am a recovering runner too, and since I have gone paleo, I have not had a single migraine, nor has my persistent ITB syndrome been a problem. I used to be unable to get past a mile without stopping from years of wear and tear. Now I can run 10k’s without pain.
In other news, I was standing behind a woman at the grocery store the other day, and she had just finished running 21 miles. She looked like hell, was cold and her legs were cramping. I actually felt sorry for her and just wondered why in the world anyone would do that to themselves. Just another way that crossfit has changed me…I used to get furious to the point of tears when I would hear of someone going distances longer than my own…

The ladies and I are going up Thursday night. Just text me when you arrive. There won’t be space in our room, as we have added the max, but I think Peter was going too…

Don’t run over a mile! Done!
    🙂
It sounds like it could be ITB syndrome. Google it to see if that’s what it sounds like. There are stretches and exercises you can do to clear it up. Coincidentally deep squats are one of them.
Go ahead and see a doctor to get professional advice though. And maybe some good drugs. Just don’t take any NSAIDs. 🙂

In the way of migraines…I just got my first one last night (it’s been a long time coming since I’ve had headaches all my life and my dad gets severe migraines). Any suggestions aside from Excedrin Migraine? Thanks!

RobertA, it’s MoMo. Not sure if I’ve met you. You can text me if you like, I’m sure we will be eating meals and hanging out. My cell is 404-713-8111. Just identify yourself, as I get a lot of texts from dudes I don’t know. Just kidding.

Opiates, like codeine, work for me, but I have a strong stomach. Many people find that opiates make them sick, and since people are already on the verge of barfing during migraines, they don’t like to use them. There are some shots that work for people and the shot comes in pill form as well, but, I think that medicine makes you feel as weird as the migraine itself, as they can affect your blood pressure. Most of the time, I just deal with it, but as I said, I have almost made it a year without one!!!

Shooting pain is bad. I don’t have much experience with this, since I don’t usually run over a mile. Any info I know comes from the running cert:
    1. check your running form – ask a trainer for help with this
    2. check your shoes
    3. soft tissue relaxation – Mike is pretty good at these. It’s like giving yourself a deep tissue massage.
    4. If your shoes gave you a lot of support, you’d want to do some foot exercises – picking rope up with toes; walking around barefoot
    5. fish oil
    6. paleo diet
Again, these are things that I was told helped others. I know how to do them, but I don’t know if they will help you.
PS: don’t be afraid to see a doctor

Paleo seems to help some folks with migraine.
Here’s an article on diet and migraine,
    http://www.nutrition4health.org/NOHAnews/NNS02DietMigraineHeadaches.htm
Most interesting is that aspartame (in all diet drinks) is thought to be linked to migraine

Hummm thats odd…i seem to get my share of txts from random dudes also. I guess that can be attributed to my night job at Swinging Richards. I joined crossfit so i could one day crush a walnut between my butt cheeks like my co workers:) BTW times are tough right now so Im offering 2 for 1 lap dances MWF’s. On a less serious note, Ill try to meet some of the ppl going this week.

tri-pod, I just type-pad stalked you, and there’s quite a few posts directed to me that I never received notice of, so I wanted to let you know that I wasn’t ignoring you…and now I’m a little concerned that you have been trying to talk to me for a while and that I just gave you my cell phone number. uh-oh. that’s right ladies, he works at swinging richards, and his self-appointed nickname is tri-pod…heidi, do you have any thoughts on this??

Okay, now on to some good, clean fun. This Wednesday night, the party-planning committee will kick off weekly bbq’s at Crossfit Atlanta. We are planning this for each Friday, but as the really fun people are leaving for Nashville Thursday, we are moving it on up this week. We will have lots of meat and certainly some cocktails, right Dan?? I think we should start around the end of the last workout, so 7:30 or 8. The smell of grilling meat should encourage everyone to finish quickly with a PR.
In other exciting news, I am going to be in charge of the facebook page for CFATL. I plan to have lots of fun information up there, like fun tid-bits about our trainers, featured athletes that are showing dedication and consistency, and the all important male booty cam photos. Be sure to look us up and become a fan on facebook soon. We will help you set up a profile for those of you who STILL don’t have one (KEN and KURT). This way, you can be part of the fun, and simultaneously be aware that we are making fun of you.

Heidi????Is this the same Heidi who comes in at lunch on Wednesday and takes me to VIP and throws glazed doughnuts at my bare bum trying to get them stick. Heidi, I had no idea you were a crossfitter??? Walnuts and avocado’s would be more appropriate than glazed doughnuts (and a lot less messy)…

    Suzanne,
I think the suggestions you got from everyone else are reasonable, but I do have one additional idea for you. There are five or six books out there that exist for the sole purpose of self-diagnosing running injuries and suggesting practical ways to fix them. I don’t personally have any ideas on Achilles problems, but have used one of the books for other injuries with success (“The Runner’s Repair Manual”). Here is a short link to an Amazon list of these sorts of books:

I think going to a doctor is a good idea; this is more of an adjunct to help you understand exactly/mechanically what is happening. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

In my defense, what else could have possibly happened on a night when someone was tapping me on the shoulder with a shot of tequila every 15 minutes.

Did that bench press, pull-up, back squat workout today.
    Body weight:92kg
    Bench Press: 17-15-10-8-7 = 57
    Pull-up: 28-23-17-17-15 = 100
    Back Squat: 4-4-1-4-3 = 16
    Total: 173
This was the only workout from the past few days that had heavy squats in it, and I clearly need to work at them. Left the gym with a giant headache.

Why do we have a new fan-page? What’s wrong with the currently existing Facebook group which already has 230 members?

    Dave:
There is but one official Crossfit Atlanta facebook page. It has far fewer fans than the page to which you refer, so I am wondering if someone else created another page. In any event, Dan has asked me to coordinate and promote the official Crossfit Atlanta facebook page. Hope everyone will become a fan soon, so we can keep you all up to date on useful information and fun social events. Sorry for any confusion.

OK, the one I am currently a member of might not be official, though it does list all the same info and Dan McDougald and Vasiliy Buharin are listed as the administrators of the group.
    You can see it here:
    http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=18841102496
Also, the existing page is a group, not a fan page. Maybe somebody can post a message to the group and tell them to join the fan page?

  • Margaret

right you are…I am discussing with Dan and will probably become the admin of this page as well, and then seek to consolidate the two pages so there is less confusion.
