Quick! Someone alert Kelly Clarkson! This just in from “Time” magazine:

Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin
“The basic problem is that while it’s true that exercise burns calories and that you must burn calories to lose weight, exercise has another effect: it can stimulate hunger. That causes us to eat more, which in turn can negate the weight-loss benefits we just accrued. Exercise, in other words, isn’t necessarily helping us lose weight. It may even be making it harder.”

Ian’s CrossFit Kids “games” the past two days have been so much fun, and it has made me find muscles that I haven’t seen in a while. I didn’t know that was still possible after almost 1 year of CrossFit.
I learned how to rope climb up yesterday, got half way up, realized that all of the instruction was to go up and I didn’t know how to get down. I will be wearing pants to work today.

Sometimes losing weight isn’t the point of exercise!

The idea that exercise makes you thin simply because it burns calories is from the calories in calories out school – the same school of thought that say all you have to do to lose weight is eat less than you burn. It’s this thinking that justifies eating crap and pretending to be healthy just because you exercise.
The competing hypothesis is that proper nutrition sets up a favorable hormonal environment. Exercise then adds to this by (for example) increasing your insulin sensitivity and boosting testosterone every now and again. The benefits of exercise are severly blunted if your nutrition isn’t laying the framework of a proper hormone environment. Sure, exercise burns calories – that’s not the point of it, though.
And, yes, exercise also makes you eat more than you would had you not been exercising. This doesn’t meen exercise hinders weightloss. For people that have weight to lose, exercise helps. From her pictures it seems Kelly Clarkson is not one of those people – she shouldn’t expect great weight loss from exercise because she doesn’t have any extra weight to lose (much like Heidi :).
If you believe eating Paleo is better for you than eating junk. And if you believe that pull ups and squats have benefits different from jogging (though both burn calories), I see no reason for you not to agree with the above quote from the article.

Listen, will someone PLEASE move to Costa Rica and open a CrossFit?! ANYONE! I’m moving to CR for a few months in January, and I just can’t stand the idea of life without CrossFit (i’m so lame).
But seriously, we need to make it happen.

Love the 3 Bars of Death.
Last time I did Linda was at the old gym, used 70kg,40kg and 35kg. Time was 1:16, yeah, that was fun.
So, today, still used 70kg and 40kg (although I was told that was too light)and did the cleans at the RX weight of 45kg. 47:42 I think was the time…it’s on the board.
Still not a fan of Linda. 🙂

Good Job Heidi! I am going to try it with 70 and 35 tonight. We’ll see how that goes. You are a bad A.

    Linda as RX’d
    Deadlifts-262.5lbs
    Bench Press-175lbs
    Cleans-135lbs
Been doing mostly Crossfit Football, but HAD to try this one again… ~decided to do full cleans at the last moment, as my knee felt great. Ken’s chipper a couple of weeks ago from HQ in ’05 was the 1st WOD with cleans since I fractured my tibia-and those were with 95lbs-but it went great! 18 sec pr (38:21) even though leg still atrophied and recovering
~btw, my CNS is SHOT now.

Nice Margaret that made me laugh…
But I am pretty sure Dan is not gonna start up the male version of the booty cam any time soon. Thank God.

Linda, just about as Rx’d – a little light on the bench, but heavy on the deads and cleans.
30:59 [PR by almost five minutes]

Okay, so I just did this workout with pushups instead of bench (not enough benches), 35 ks for cleans and 70 ks for deadlifts. Can’t believe I made it through with those weights…I am VERY happy about this development. 44:31
Oh, and whoever left me that cute note on the board…thank you, it brightened my day for certain!!!
