If I see another 21-15-9 I’m gonna puke. I’ll ask the dumb question though, are these power cleans or full cleans?

LOL. Squat cleans, unless you choose to do ‘Power Elizabeth’.

    Squat Cleans!!!
I did this scaled to 70kg for the squat cleans. 11:06

Who gets to decide whether they are squat cleans or full cleans?
I distinctly recall Brent, Ken, and Mike all doing power cleans on Linda last month to beat a time that I put up doing squat cleans (I was told by whomever was coaching at the time that only squat cleans counted). They didn’t do “Power Linda”. It was just Linda.

For the past two nights, I have been dreaming about different ways to divide 21, 15 and 9. Lots of 7’s, 5’s and 3’s floating around in my head.
Question: I have a bad ankle, I think. When I was in 5th grade, I tore several ligaments. Since then, I have always been able to stand on the side of my foot, bascially on my ankle with little to no pain. Gross, I know. For the past six months, I have notice bruising in that same ankle, but no pain or swelling, so I have been ignoring it. Today it hurts. Not bad, but a little painful, especially in high heels. No swelling. So what do I do? I made an appointment with a foot and ankle specialist at Peachtree Orthopedic Clinic, but my experience with doctors is not good. They are always too conservative and tell me to walk instead of run, which results in me losing all confidence in their ability. Should I see a doctor, and if so, who?

I would see the doc. Swelling is hard to notice in such a bony area as the top of your foot/lower ankle. If you’ve done any tissue damage, you’ll want to have it looked at.

I didn’t do it last month.
Oops…Yeah, did Linda and we did power cleans.
Elizabeth has always been traditionally squat cleans. Just the way it is I guess. Kind of like how Grace is power cleans + jerks.

I thought about doing this weight… not sure if I can handle that many 70kg squat cleans though.

This probably isn’t what you want to hear, but in my experience with torn ligaments there’s not a lot to be done. I have tears in the outer ligaments of both my ankles. the doc said if I was a professional athlete they MIGHT consider surgery. Otherwise, I have to live with it. They roll over very easily and hurt/swell for a week or so. Sucks, but there’s nothing to be done. I hope your case is fixable.

Actually, if they tell me there’s nothing they can do, and I just have to live with it, that will make me very happy. If they tell me there’s floating particles in there that they have to take out, I will be unhappy. I don’t want surgery, because surgery = time off. I don’t mind the pain, and the bruising, well, that’s just a constant state of affairs when you’re a crossfitter. I just want to make sure the blood collecting doesn’t mean something bad is going on, and the pain today gave me pause (but only a little, I’ll be in tonight).

Would second Jason’s recommendation to see a doc.
I’ve had a similar experience with the unhelpful “you should walk instead of run” diagnosis some years ago when I badly tore up my ankle trail running. I went to to a sports medicine specialist (ended up having to pay out of my own pocket), the experience was completely different. Instead of telling me to just lay off of it and writing a prescription for some crutches, they redid the X-ray to check for hairline fractures and prescribed a pretty rigorous physical therapy regime that involved (among other things) a bunch of balance exercises to prevent the ankle from rolling.
So see a doc, try to talk to a sports medicine doc if you can.

    No, totally not like Grace.
I also distinctly remember that Elizabeth is squat cleans, and Linda is ALSO squat cleans. Doing power cleans on Linda makes it a different workout.
Grace on the other hand is two hands anyhow.

Well, best of luck Momo. I can’t imagine an ankle could keep someone like you out of the gym, anyway.
Rest day for me. I love cleans, but eight days in a row would be a bad idea. Definitely making this one up, though.

I think you are both wrong. I don’t think that the rules are clear on any of these workouts. You can do whatever you want on these. Remember, the goal here is fitness. I think every gym has its own set of rules for leaderboard standards. If you want to be on our board for Elizabeth, do squat cleans. If you want to be on the leaderboard for Grace, do power cleans. I don’t really care on Linda because I hate that workout. I would say to do power cleans on that one. Power output usually drops when people use squat cleans. They spend a lot of time sitting around looking at the weights. With power cleans, you are able to keep moving.

I must agree with everyone… see the doctor.
I know you can bear the pain/bruising/swelling. But all those things, or even just one, mean that something isn’t right. Listen to your body, and treat it nice. It is true that ligament tears can stay with you for a long time, but I see this as a long term issue that you have. So therefore any work that was needed is past its time (I can be wrong though). So this means investing in some kind of ankle support brace and work it back to full strength.. aka no pain or bruising. Also I would include full range stretching and stabilization post workout. Lastly, ice is God’s blessing to pain. Ice it EVERYDAY; it’s a cheap fix that always works.
Good luck! Hope all goes well.

Margaret…who do you have an appointment with at Peachtree Ortho? Ive seen Dr Griffin twice for a torn ACL and she is very good. Dr York is also knowledgable but i believe he works mostly with shoulders.
Worst case scenario you can buy a case of beer for preworkout and ducktape your ankle for stability. If you need any type of prescription pain killers, or any other drug for that matter i sell right out of my car in the parking lot. jk
ALso, I saw a posts a few weeks back about ppl going to Nashville for a Crossfit related event. My little sister lives there and Im looking for an excuse to show up on her uninvited and hit on some of her college friend. Anyone going?

Who is this mysterious RobertA person?? I am sure I would recognize your face, even if I don’t know your name. Are you the one I looked at last night and said “don’t let me get off this bar without doing at least 11 pullups..” and you gave me that kind of like “geeez, okay lady” look??? My ankle doesn’t hurt bad enough for narcotics, but a vicadin/beer combo could be fun for going out. ONLY KIDDING.
Yes, a bunch of us are going to the competition in TN. Heidi, Leah, Peter, Yours Truly. You should come, they are always great.

Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful comments. I have an appointment Tues and will let you know how it goes. Probably something along the lines of “your ankle looks fine, but you should see a different kind of doctor, you know, for your head…” In any event, Beefalo told me her doc’s name, and I might try to get in with him. Sounds like he has an understanding of how badly I will hate missing workouts if he’s met B. I will just drop her name, and he’ll be like “okay, enough said, here’s some tape.”

Nashville sounds fun…not sure im exactly ready for competition but ill give it a try. btw…if we are talking about therapeutic development i must admit to the group that i dodged the workout today because counting to 21 while doing front squats didnt sound as appealing as starting labor day weekend a little early. I feel better now that i got that off my chest.
    Thx,

Momo, take some ice put one handful in a baggie and wrap it in a kitchen towel and place on the sore part of your foot. Take a second handful of ice and put it in a rocks glass with some vodka, drink.

    Margaret,
I decided to reveal myself to the group(i posted a pic) even though i usually like to remain anonymous. I am often seen lurking in the background at Crossfit making weird grunting noises while doing air squats. My nickname to my friends ( i really dont have many friends but for the purpose of this blog we’ll pretend like i do) is “tripod”…and no its not what your gutter mind is thinking, its because im posing with a tripod in the picture.
Sorry for my immature posts, i had my condo painted today and i think the paint fumes are getting to my head.

“Elizabeth”, scaled to 110#, 19:44 (I think — should have written it down)
Sloppy cleans, sloppy dips, today I was glad there are no judges holding up score-cards in Crossfit.

ring dips were easier this time, but squat cleans more challenging. maybe I can blame the Fran+rowing workout.
